Camera Composition in Film Preliminary Exercise (Individual Task)

 Pt 1.

Today in class we studied camera composition and learned about different techniques and styles that are commonly used in a film. Camera composition in film is the way a scene is arranged within the camera frame, which can grab the audience's attention and direct them to a certain person or object. It is important in film because it directs the viewers' attention and if one does it wrong it can mess up the entirety of the film. Important key concepts are The Rule of Thirds, Balance, Blocking, Depth of Field, and Camerawork.

For this assignment, I was responsible for doing research on Depth of field. I was able to choose from any movie and describe the scene. I chose a scene from Happy Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt.1

The director of the film used a shallow focus (Foreground In Focus and background Out-of-Focus) shot to focus on the subject to emphasize what they’re doing rather than focusing on the background. The central idea of the fame is the main subject Hermione, and to focus on what she is doing which is why she is focused. We see Harry and Ron both on the floor out of focus since his situation has already been taken care of. Rather than just having a close-up on Hermione, Ron and Harry are still in the frame to show a connection to all three of them.  Hermione looks extremely panicked and is seen casting protective spells as Ron is injured in the background. It takes place in a forest after a run-in with the ministry of magic which is why Hermione and Harry are both wearing business attire. The wand in the frame shows she is casting what looks like defensive spells around Harry and Ron to protect them. The lighting is dim to connotate a more intense and unsettling side to the frame, leaving the audience to feel worried as well. Wide eye level 3-Shot.
