Camera Composition in Film Preliminary Exercise (Group Assignment)

With this assignment, we had to teach the research we learned for homework and teach our teammates. It was easy teaching my teammates about depth of field since this technique is extremely common. My teammates were responsible for The Rule of Thirds, Balance, and Blocking.

Planning (storyboard)= I helped my teammates create their storylines, but we all contributed. I also drew the boxes and created the storyboard.

Production (Taking photos of your frames) = We all helped each other with the frames and camerawork. We also all acted in each other's storylines.

Post Production (Editing and compiling your organizer.) = Everyone worked on their own storyline but help was given when needed.

Teammate 1:

The genre of the frame is an interview. This movie star is being interviewed while in the office. The emotion is sadness because he was asked how the death of his mother has affected his acting career. The use of a Pov shot gives the illusion that the viewer and the actor are having a one-on-one conversation. This is a close-up one shot. The setting is the office, the costume is casual attire, lighting is overhead.

The genre of the frame is “I run this”. In the image, this character is excited to receive a text stating that he became the president of his senior class. The subject is ecstatic and joyful, and a full shot is used to show the body language of this emotion. The camera composition shows the vibrant background setting and body language together fully exemplifying the happy emotion. The bright coloring and natural lighting are able to produce a natural and joyful feeling.

The genre of the photo is “All work no play” where the photo depicts a track athlete getting ready for his sprint and focused on his form. The full and slight overhead shot allows one to fully view the setting along with the movement and form of the subject. Using an asymmetrical shot I allowed the viewer to be able to recognize the emphasis on the left side of the frame where the subject is located while also being able to focus on the setting as well to depict the full photo.

Teammate 2:
the genre of this picture is a walk on campus. I'm trying to show that the character is at school and is nervous to walk on campus. this emotion is considered to be nervousness and anxiety. I used the camera to show the first scene of the movie where a new girl is jealous to go into her new school. I used a 3 person shot and it's at shoulder level, it was shown to show how the girl was looking over the school to analyze it. this was taken at a school in an outside environment and the costumes are casual.

the genre of the frame is friends forever. my idea for this frame is to make a cartoon-like edit to show off the theme of friends forever. The emotion was happiness and excitement. the camera work and editing took the picture to the next level and added color and shape to the frame. the frame is a full shot at a shoulder-level angle. the setting was at a school, the acting was happy, the costumes were casual, the color and lighting were bright, and the tone was inviting and funny.

ME
The Genre of the frame is “Its My World”, it's about a girl named Jessica who just found out she is class president, she feels as if she can rule the world. The audience can feel a sense of excitement as Jessica receives her letter. Because Jessica is in focus the audience can pay attention to her reaction to the news rather than those in the back. This is a medium eye level 3-shot. The phone in hand and fist in the air can already tell the audience the news without having to say anything. The look of excitement on Jessica's face sets the scene for this frame.

The genre of the frame is “Alone In A Crowd”. The frame depicts Maya eating lunch by herself on the stairs watching people talk to their friends. This frame leaves the audience to feel sympathy for Maya since she’s eating lunch alone. Since the foreground is out of focus and is closing in on the subject (Maya), she is the only one focused to pay attention to her and her body language as she is watching those out of focus make connections with their friends. Even though they aren't focused they are still important to the shot to show a connection to the subject and “extras”. This is a Wide eye level 4-shot.
