Editing and Film Graphic Organizer

For this group assignment, we had to describe a list of vocabulary words and provide the effects that they create within the film. We each had a list of vocabulary words that we had to define. For this assignment, I had to define the following: Editor, spatial editing,180-degree rule, graphic match, parallel editing, I-cut, Wipe, slow motion, and visual effects.

Cristina Mayfield

Editor: Someone who assembles all raw footage and inputs uncut rushes of sound with an outline of footage and/or a shot list, script, or screenplay.

-Makes revisions as per the request of the Director.

-Trimming segments of footage.

-Reads the scripts to understand the vision of the Director.

spatial editing:  Spatial editing is when the relations between shots function to construct film space.

-helps the audience understand where they are

180-degree rule- A basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.

-the flow of the camera between characters as they speak makes the conversation seem real

Controls the scene

graphic match- Graphic matches, or match cuts, are useful in relating two otherwise disconnected scenes, or in helping to establish a relationship between two scenes.

-Connection is drawn between the two shots

-Creates a smooth transition

-Establishes a strong continuity of action

parallel editing: Technique used to portray multiple lines of action, occurring in different places, simultaneously.

-Adds suspense within the scene

- Allows the viewer to practically experience both sides of the event first-hand.

-Can narrate a line of action with another line of action

.

l cut- An I cut (sometimes called an invisible cut) marries two scenes together with two similar frames.

-nearly unnoticeable cut

-makes the production feel as though it’s one long take            -

-Creates a smooth transition

Wipe:  A type of film transition where one shot replaces another by traveling from one side of the frame to another or with a special shape.

-used between different storylines or locations.

-used to establish that the story is jumping to a different plotline

- works as a visual cue to the audience that the story is moving along, emulating a curtain falling after a scene in a play slow

slow motion- an effect in film-making whereby time appears to be slowed down

add deeper, emotional intensity to a scene or sequence.

- creates drama on a larger scale, and achieves a deeper impact.

-helps to tell the whole story of a battle while also communicating the feel of the fight.

visual effects-  A term used to describe imagery created, manipulated, or enhanced for any film, or other moving media that doesn't take place during live-action shooting.

-integration between actual footage and this manipulated imagery to create realistic-looking environments for the context.

 - use tools that help in all capacities of blending the line between "real" and "unreal."

 - to make something fake look real
