Planning in Film Activity II: Sound in Film Analysis #1

What is the purpose of sound in the film?

Sound is important in delivering information about the plot of the film. Sound also allows the audience to know when

The Components of Sound

Define Dialogue

Cinematic dialogue is oral speech between fictional characters.

Define Sound Effects

Sound effect is an artificially created or enhanced sound, or sound process used to emphasize artistic or other content of media.

Define Music

An arrangement of sounds having melody, rhythm, and usually harmony classical music.

Define diegetic sounds

A diegetic sound is any sound that emanates from a film – it can include everything from the voices of characters, the dialogues, an internal monologue, and even the sounds of objects.

List the diegetic sounds in the movie and give two or more examples.

0: 51 - Kids playing and laughing at the park

2:06 - Asher, Fiona, and Jonas are having a friendly conversation; Dialogue

Define non-diegetic sounds

Non-diegetic sound is sound that comes from our worlds, such as the soundtrack or scoring.

List the non-diegetic sounds in the movie and give two or more examples.

0:40 - The narration throughout the opening sequence

1:18 - The music playing in the background of the opening; scoring/soundtracks sound

Sound Techniques

Define Synchronous Sound

Synchronous sounds are those sounds that are synchronized or matched with what is viewed.

List 3 examples of synchronous sound

0: 51 - Kids playing and laughing at the park

0: 59 - Someone is pushing a button and it makes a noise

2:05 - Dialogue between characters

Define Asynchronous

sound

An asynchronous sound is a term for a sound that has not been synchronized with the screen image.

List 3 examples of asynchronous sound

2:03 The audience hears a bell being rung but the shot still focuses on Jonas

-Birds chirping

-The wind whistling

Define parallel sound when

When the sound we hear should usually go hand in hand with the image on the screen.

Define contrapuntal sound

Audio that contrasts with the visuals in order to make a point.

Describe the soundscape in the film's opening and use examples. Is the sound parallel or contrapuntal? Use the Sound in Film Lesson pdf to see essential vocabulary.

The soundscape in the film's opening would be considered parallel. Majority of the synchronous sounds align with what is being shown within the frame. The kids playing in the background or dialogue between characters match with what is being presented. Aside from the narration and a few asynchronous sounds, the opening is equivalent to the frames. Not to mention the soundscape parallels the scenery. When the audience gets a look at the trees we can hear the trees moving with the wind and whistles the wind makes as well. In addition, ambient sounds such as the “whooshing” at 2:31 aligns with the flying objects the audience sees, although there is no context or characters describing what is going on or what it is, the audience assumes it is normal and would consider it a soundscape. Lastly the diegetic sounds connotate a peaceful and serene setting which coordinates with the leaves and birds chirping in the background.
